Found in New Zealand’s Waitomo district, the Glowworm Caves were created 30 million years ago. The limestone cave is lit up by countless enchanted glowworms suspended along the walls and ceilings like radiant ornaments. The glowworms are only found in New Zealand and are about the same size as a mosquito. During your visit, you can choose kayaking or boating through the dark surroundings.
Sea of Stars, Vaadhoo Island in Maldives
Found in Raa Atoll, Vaadhoo Island, Maldives, is famous for the Sea of Stars phenomenon, in which the blue waves of the cool ocean waters naturally sparkle and glow at night. The crystal clear blue is due to the natural chemical reaction of bioluminescence, which happens when the marine microorganism phytoplankton is disintegrated by oxygen.
Cave of the Crystals, Mexico
The Cave of the Crystals is located 980 feet underneath Naica’s Chihuahua Desert in Mexico. Formed around 26 million years ago, the cave houses some of the largest formations ever discovered on Earth, including massive selenite crystals discovered in the cave’s main chamber. The biggest crystal found here is 33 feet in length and weighs 55 tons.
Blood Falls in Antarctica
Blood Falls, and the name itself doesn’t sound very welcoming, does it? This waterfall is a totally natural sight in Antarctica and was first found by an Australian geologist in 1911. Red coloration is because of a complicated chemical reaction formed by iron oxide dissolved in saltwater when exposed to oxygen. But initially, scientists thought the reason was red algae.
Wisteria Tunnel in Japan
At Japan’s Kitakyushu lies the Kawachi Fuji Gardens, home to the stunning Wisteria Tunnel. This 100-meter-long tunnel is nothing short of a fairytale location with approximately 20 different species of gorgeous wisteria flowers, which bloom in hues from white to dark purple. The ideal time to visit is during April, when the tunnel is filled with blooms.
